| Ornamental Roman jewellery was worn by women of high status, wealth and beauty. Women of Ancient Rome loved to wear jewellery, such as bracelets, necklaces, pendants, earrings, rings, amulets, cameos, tiaras, coronets and diadems. This jewellery was often made with gemstones and precious metals, such as gold and silver. A gemstone that was very popular and valuable was Amber. Other beautiful gemstones that were used with silver jewellery were Lapis Lazuli, Emeralds, Agate, Turquoise, Carnelian, Jasper, Rubies, Sapphires, Pearls, Amethysts, Black Onyx, Sardonyx, Chalcedony, and Rose Quartz. Snake silver jewellery, such as bangles, rings and pendants were very popular, and so were coins, laurel leaves, spirals, cones, bunches of grapes and guilloche designs. Some jewellery would contain symbols which the Romans thought would bring them prosperity and protection. Roman boys wore a bulla, which was a round pouch that contained amulets and was worn around the neck. Given to them when they were babies, these lockets would protect them from evil forces and spirits. Silver jewellery is still beautiful and in vogue today.
